Checked out Revolver’s ‘The Art of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal‘ issue and thought it was a pretty good read. Lots of interesting details behind some very influential album art (there are some whack records in there, but overall a good selection). A lot of this stuff is clearly in the heyday of album art and heavy metal, a bygone era where the cover could do just as much to sell a record as radio play. Here are nine of my favourite metal album covers.

Love Songs
What better way to spend Valentine’s day than checking out some black metal stuff I used to really dig? This whole scene got so goofy at one point that I had a hard time listening to the music. Sometimes it is nice to take a break from genres and revisit them with less scrutiny and an open ear. These are what I would consider some of the standouts.
Something Old Is New Again

Redesigned and repressed vinyl version of Buried Inside ‘Chronoclast’ is now available for pre-order from Init Records, out of Sioux Falls SD. This LP is black on black letterpress on black (800 copies) and white/burgundy (first 200) 180 gram vinyl. Strangely, this repress is closer to the original vision the band had back in 2004. It was cool to revisit a design I had been unsatisfied with and do something different. This will be my first experiment with letterpress, really excited to see the final results.
Vs. Europe
Happy to be able to officially announce that I will be playing guitar for Buried Inside on their European tour with Tombs this November. It has been a lot of fun practicing with the boys again–learning new songs and reminiscing on old ones. If you happen to be around in any of these places come check us out.

Slayer
It’s no secret that Slayer are one of the most important thrash bands. They set metal on a course through evil that would be unrivaled until Euros started burning down churches and killing themselves and each other. And let’s face it, that whole scene is quite laughable now in 2009. On the other hand, Slayer’s classic album covers (and even some of the new ones) are as creepy today as they were when I was 13. And through it all is that Slayer wordmark. Easy to replicate and insidiously evil it is a perfect heavy metal logo. Check out this awesome blog: Satan Laughs As You Eternally Rot.

did this for my buddy tiro’s company but he opted to go with a more traditional logo. it’s funny because he’s black. black metal.
