HMCS Thorlock

I drew this for K with ink and watercolour. It’s the HMCS Thorlock which is a flower class corvette her grandfather served on during WW2. It’s main role was to escort transatlantic convoys for the Allied forces. In 1945, the Thorlock was also involved in a U-Boat surrender. It was eventually sold to the Chilean Navy where it was used until 1967. There was a time when Canada could boast the third largest navy force in the world. Today it’s quite the opposite despite a strong campaign for increased recruitment and budget.
Motivation

I used to stare at this drawing for hours. It sat to the left of my monitor. A constant reminder that I was working for someone else and that my professional opinion was always 6 approvals away from having any merit. That was a hard grind. But this little drawing used to make me smile, so I post it here for anyone who is stuck in a place they don’t want to be doing things they don’t want to be doing.
The Arctic
Had to do some illustrations of the Arctic for a project I’m currently working on. These didn’t make the cut, but thought they were cool nonetheless.

Jambo Bwana
Got a sweet new tattoo from Liz at her new shop on Harbord: Speakeasy. Really happy with it, she’s been doing really great work lately so if you need any work done this is the place to go. Also, the best coffee in town is one door down.

Emoticult
Matt and I have both been obsessed with the People’s Temple and Jim Jones in general ever since we saw the PBS documentary on the subject. A lot of google searches later and it’s apparent that Jim Jones is a renewed subject of interest amongst all types. He’s popping up in art, fashion, and hardcore. In the spirit of collectivism, I spent a few minutes sprucing up everyone’s favourite ‘cool guy’ emoticon. Two messenger-friendly options available: Positive Jim Jones (“to me death is not a fearful thing…”) and Negative Jim Jones (“… it’s the living that’s cursed”).
