This is as close as I’ve come to an award. Party on number 9!

One of the many reasons I love the internet is that it provides a place for niche archives. Ten years ago, if I had to find vintage footage of Milwaukee television news promos I’d have to fly down there and search individual station archives (i’m guessing on this one). Instead, here we are in 2010 and all I have to do is check out this youtube channel: A great collection of similar clips and commercials from the same era. I don’t know if it is nostalgia, but there seems to be a quality of fun and innocence in these clips that’s hard to come by on television these days.
Some of my favourites after the jump.
Pelican Fly
When you hear that someone has made a film about Lil’ Wayne you fear the worst. The rap film game is usually handled one of two ways: the written, directed and starring, quasi-autobiographical, scarface-inspired, ‘I thought 75k was a lot of money to make a movie’ kind. The second is basically a higher budget version of the same thing usually importing the written by and directed by credits for a bit of, well, credit. So it was a nice surprise to see LW handled differently on ‘The Carter.’
This documentary follows LW for six months. These include the moments just before and just after the release of his commercial break out album ‘The Carter III’. Footage ranges from interview excerpts, improv guitar (put that thing down dude!), forehead tattoo sessions, live shows, hotel recordings, knowledge bombs (“repetition is the key to all learning. repetition is the key to all learning”), and vehement drug abuse. Regardless of what your opinion of LW is this movie warrants a viewing.

Twenty Ten

A new year, a new decade. Despite a world economy on the fritz, I managed to spend three and a half months of 2009 traveling. Started the year with a trip and ended it with two different ones. And although not everything went to plan, I feel blessed to have been able to experience so much in the span of one year. It’s been said a million times before, but travel truly is the best way to learn about both the world at large and the world inside your own head. After a nomadic year, I feel nothing but optimism for this year. Looking forward to enjoying this city, my friends, and a renewed interest in design and creativity. To my friends and family: I hope this year brings you the absolute best, I’m rooting for you.
